Hello! So, Spencer and I went out for a boat ride yesterday, to the group of islands nearby called the Broken Group. The day started out pretty foggy, but as we got to the islands, it warmed up and the fog disappeared. The photo above shows the fog as we left it. It was a bit chilly on the way out, and the fog made tiny water droplets all over our faces and clothes. We saw a porpoise too, which was really cool! Disappointingly, that was the only charismatic megafauna that we saw-- no whales or bears the whole day. So I have nothing to add to my count... Anyhow, we landed on Jacques Island (I would have pronounced that the French way, but we talked to some people later who called it "Jake's", so I don't know) and poked around a bit, and Spencer found a crazy tidal lake. It's a big pool that would be flooded at high tide, but not at low tide, all surrounded by trees and stuff, and then there was a stream running out of it. In the little bay where we parked the boat there were tons of cool little fish, which was also neat to see.
Then we drove on, and found Turtle Island, which had a lovely little beach for lunch. It's hard to find beaches around in there, since the islands are so rocky and there isn't much wave action to make a beach with. The gravel on the beach was really warm in the sun, and it was really super nice to sit around there. Max had a good time too, of course, though he got a bit hot.
As the tide came up and the water swallowed our lunch beach, we decided to drive on. Our next destination was to Nettle Island, to look for some archaeologists that Spencer knows who were working out there. We found their camp, but they weren't there, because it turns out that yesterday was a holiday. They were actually at the marine station! Jeez. But we had a nice drive around, and returned back to town before the afternoon wind could pick up too badly.
We ended up finding and visiting with the archeologists back at the marine station, and it was neat to hear about their work out there. It ended up being a really nice day out. We both needed to get out of Bamfield for a little while, and it was also awesome to experience some summer temperatures. I've been missing that, because it hasn't been too good here lately. Today was nice too though.
Anyhow, check out my photo gallery (link over there on the right) to see some more photos of our outing. I hope you all are well!
